Cornerstone Church of God
Arcadia, Nova Scotia, Canada
Cornerstone Church of God, as it is known today, was started in 1984/85 as an independent work by a group of loyal Christians who loved the Lord and had a dream of worshiping together and winning souls for God. After meeting together for about a year in a boat house in Wedgeport, (where they were known as “the boat people”), a large lot of land was purchased in Arcadia. There were some hardships in getting the deed for the property but finally the land was purchased and all the required permits obtained. Owen & Cathy Nickerson were among the first to start work. They fought the heat and mosquitoes with their bush-cutters and started clearing alder bushes off the land. The men all soon joined in with Herb Purdy leading the construction. Herb also made and donated the lovely pulpit and communion table that remain today, and can be seen in the photos section.
The first church members moved in for services soon after the roof was on and the bathrooms were working. Tar paper walls, pink insulation, and orange chairs are among some of the first memories of the founding members of Cornerstone. The worship services were beautiful with Ethel Purdy on the piano. Bud Hurlbert and Dick Bourque served as ministers. Cornerstone Christian Assembly had finally opened.
In 1995 Cornerstone joined 'Church of God' and soon after changed it’s name to Cornerstone Church of God.
