Cornerstone Church of God
Arcadia, Nova Scotia, Canada
Cornerstone remembers past members who have gone on to be with the Lord. We pay tribute to them here, and look forward to seeing them again in Heaven someday.

Richard gave his heart to Christ quite late in life and soon became a fervent member of the Cornerstone Family. He was a faithful servant of God in every way and was always ready to do what he could for his Savior. In a few short years he gained a great knowledge of the scriptures and loved to read and study the word of God.
Richard always looked forward to spring and was the first to put his vegetables in the ground when it came time to plant. He faced illness and death with the same faith, courage and confidence that he had in life. He never once complained during painful times, and there were many during his final days. The kind and gentle spirit that God gave him after he accepted Christ as his Savior is still mentioned by many people when his name comes up. The entire Cornerstone Family looks forward to seeing him in Heaven someday.
Arthur
was one of the earliest members of Cornerstone, helping with its
construction. Arthur is remembered as a precious grandfather by his
twelve grandchildren, and was known for his green thumb. His yards
always had beautiful flowers. Two years before his death in 1997 Arthur
supplied his testimony to be printed in Cornerstone’s weekly church
bulletin. It is reprinted here. “As a young man with a family of five, I
worked hard and it seemed like the days were never long enough to do
what needed to be done. However God was not a part of my life, even
though a committed wife had prayed for me for 40 years. April, 1984
found me in the hospital seriously sick and things didn’t look good.
Lydia said to me ‘Arthur, you should accept the Lord before it is too
late.” I prayed asking forgiveness and to receive Christ as my Savior. I
was anxious to see the church finished and spent many hours making lawns
and flower beds and helping finish the basement. Although I have
experienced sorrow and sickness since becoming a Christian I don’t
regret the decision to turn my life over to Christ.”
As
a young married woman Lydia gave her heart to the Lord. Early on she
realized the importance of prayer. As her family came along and grew she
never missed an opportunity to pray with them. She taught them the
benefit of starting their day with prayer, a habit her son Jack likes to
continue to this day. For over 40 years she prayed for her husband
Arthur who in the early years of Cornerstone Church gave his heart to
the Lord. Lydia was ecstatic. We all gave thanks to the Lord. Lydia
lived her faith as well as talking about it and witnessing to others.
Sunday morning her car was filled with grandchildren and neighborhood
children for Sunday School. Sunday evening she would fill her car for
church with anyone who would go. She taught Sunday School for many
years, and was one of the first teachers at Cornerstone where she taught
until her death in 1989. After her death one of her sons found her
prayer list in her Bible – a long list of family, friends, and
acquaintances she had been praying for. His name had been crossed off as
he had given his heart to the Lord a few years earlier. Lydia was always
faithful to her beliefs and her legacy will live on in future
generations. We rejoice in our knowledge that Lydia truly is with the
Lord.
Arthur
remarried after his first wife passed away. Hilda had lived for the Lord
for many years and was happy to join the small but growing group of
people who worshiped at Cornerstone. At testimony time she never failed
to give thanks to the Lord for His goodness and for sending her a
companion to spend her “golden years” with. She loved to attend our home
Bible studies and join in fellowship times. Hilda lived a long life, and
in her last years she often longed for the promise of Heaven. Hilda
passed away in the Spring of this year. She is buried alongside her
first husband, Douglas Durkee, in the Chegogin cemetery.

Although
Eleanor was not one of our founding members we all loved our sister in
the Lord. She told us she had lived a somewhat difficult life and was so
happy and excited to receive the Lord as her Savior. Eleanor gave her
heart to the Lord under the ministry of Brad and Laurie Pass. They and
their children soon took Eleanor under their wing and nurtured her
along. Eleanor was soon praising the Lord and thanking Him for His
goodness. She was so happy to be able to work in the Clothing Ministry
where she could help others. Eleanor had a brief but very courageous
battle with cancer that took her from us and she is sadly missed. We
look forward to seeing her again in Heaven.
